Money trees make attractive, decorative houseplants, and are robust and easy to care for. By observing some simple guidelines, you can ensure that your money tree thrives and contributes -- if not money -- a splash of lush greenery to your household.

The money tree -- botanically known as Pachira aquatica and also called the Malabar chestnut, Guiana chestnut, and the saba nut tree -- is indigenous to Central American wetlands. Money trees are often used in feng shui design to increase "chi," or positive energy flow. The leaves bear a rough resemblance to hands and are considered particularly lucky if they feature five or more "fingers.

Money trees are non-fussy plants that are resistant to pests and most diseases. However, you should use a good-quality commercial potting soil that drains quickly; money trees are susceptible to root rot.

Bright, indirect light is ideal, but avoid placing your money tree in direct sunlight, which could scorch leaves. A balanced, all-purpose houseplant fertilizer, applied once a month, will provide ample nutrients; it is not necessary to fertilize in the winter, when the plant is dormant. Prune the growing tips of your money tree to keep it houseplant-sized. Money trees should not be over-watered; according to GFlora.

It is permissible to allow the top layer of soil to dry out to about an inch in between waterings. Waterings should be infrequent but thorough; water until the overflow comes out the holes at the bottom of the planter and then empty the saucer. Don't allow the plant to sit in standing water.

To maintain the moderate to high humidity required by your money plant, spray it weekly with a plant mister. Avoid using very cold water; tepid water is more suited to the money tree's tropical pedigree.

Guide to Houseplants recommends using a pebble tray -- both functional and attractive -- to ensure sufficient humidity. Cover the bottom of a tray with a layer of small, pleasingly colored stones, and cover with clean water. Set the money tree's container in the tray, making sure water doesn't come up over the edges of the saucer.

Propagate the plant by taking cuttings from a healthy plant. Allow the cut end to harden before planting. Plant the cutting in a mixture of soil and peat moss and place in a well-lit area.

Avoid direct sunlight and move to a permanent location when roots are well established. The dollar tree is prone to mealy bugs. Check a new plant carefully before bringing it inside. Chemicals can be purchased at any garden supply store to treat bug problems.

The dollar tree plant is a small shrub with thick oval-shaped leaves. The plant originates from South Africa and is most commonly called a jade plant. It is best grown outdoors in USDA zones 9a to 11 but will thrive indoors anywhere. The plant is popular with novice gardeners because it is easy to grow and will tolerate neglect well. Plant the dollar tree in soil that is loose and has 50 percent organic compost. Most general purpose soils will meet this requirement.

If soil is not loose enough, gravel should be added to the bottom of the pot to aid drainage. Place the plant in a location where it will receive full sun the entire day.

Some shade will be tolerated but can slow plant growth. Move outside on warm days, if possible, to allow the plant to absorb more light. Water the plant frequently enough to keep the soil constantly moist.

Avoid overwatering to the point of sogginess. Overly wet soil will cause root rot and lead to plant death. Do not allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Feed the plant every three months with a general purpose granular fertilizer. When feeding, ensure that the soil is properly moist to avoid burning the roots.

Keep the plant in areas that stay above 50 degrees at night. Move it away from drafty windows unless they are properly covered. By Carolyn Barton Updated July 21, How to Plant Alocasia.

But, many gardeners prefer keeping their watering cans outside next to a garden hose or water spout for convenience, in which case heavier metal watering cans are the better option.

Quite often, the metal, or galvanized watering cans, even become an accessory to the landscape. For more information on watering, check out our hose and sprinklers guide. Need help? Admire the beautiful tomatoes. Fill the bottles up with water to the very brim of the bottle. After watering your plant, quickly turn the bottle upside down and shove into the dirt about inches from the base of the plant.
